Eyrie Mantle-Start

After a raptor kills its prey, it covers it in a mantling position.  This is both a defensive and protective posture used to shield its prize.  For this sculpture, I was tasked to create a Broadwing Hawk to sit atop a bookshelf only 10 inches wide.

This commission comes from a former colleague from my teaching days.  She and her husband have a pair of Broadwings who return each spring to the woods behind their house and have succesfully raised a brood for the past two years.  The sculpture is a gift to her husband in celebration of their 30th anniversary.

Eyrie, a double entendre, means 'hawk's nest';  the couple lives 20 miles from the coast of Lake Erie.
